Do You Need Internet to Play GTA 6?
You need a connection to download it, since even the boxed copy is a code. After that, the PlayStation Store lists offline play. Here's the full picture, including PS Plus.

Short answer: you need an internet connection to get GTA 6 onto your console, but not to play it afterwards. Here’s what the official store listings say, and where a connection still matters.
You need internet to download it
There’s no way around this one. Every version of GTA 6 is a download, including the boxed copy, which contains a download code rather than a disc. Rockstar hasn’t published an install size, but estimates sit around 150 to 200GB, so a slow or capped connection is the real hurdle. Pre-loading from November 12 gives you a week to get it done. Our file size and storage explainer has more on the numbers, and the download calculator on our calculators page shows how long it’ll take on your speed.
After that, you can play offline
The PlayStation Store listing for GTA 6 says “Offline play enabled” and describes the game as a single-player experience for one player. In other words, once the game is installed, the story doesn’t need a constant connection.
The same listing adds that “certain game features, content, services, or functions may require internet connection”. That covers things like patches, add-ons such as the Ultimate Edition upgrade, and any online services Rockstar adds later. Microsoft’s store page doesn’t use the same wording, but lists GTA 6 as single player with cloud saves, which sync whenever you’re connected.
You’ll want a connection on day one anyway
A big release almost always has a day-one patch, and you’ll want it. Connect your console the night before launch with automatic updates switched on so it downloads while you sleep. After that, you can play offline whenever you like and update when you’re back online.
Do you need PS Plus or Game Pass?
No. On PlayStation, PS Plus is required for online multiplayer, and GTA 6 launches without an online mode, so you don’t need a subscription to play it. The same goes for Xbox: you don’t need Game Pass to play a game you’ve bought. GTA 6 also won’t be included in either subscription service at launch, which we cover in our Game Pass and PS Plus explainer.
The only Rockstar subscription linked to the launch is GTA+, and pre-orders include a free month. You don’t need it to play. Our GTA+ explainer covers what it gives you.
Will this change when online launches?
Almost certainly, for that part of the game. Whenever Rockstar adds an online mode, playing it will need a connection and, on PlayStation, a PS Plus subscription, just as GTA Online does today. The single-player story should stay playable offline.
