GTA 6's File Size: Why It's So Big
No, it isn't 677GB. That number is a myth. But even the realistic estimates point to one of the largest console installs ever shipped.

There’s a specific, very large number attached to GTA 6’s file size that circulates constantly, 677 gigabytes, and it’s worth dealing with immediately: that figure has no credible sourcing behind it and would be physically implausible to install on current console storage as a single title. If you’ve seen it repeated as fact, it’s a myth, not a leak, and treating it as real is a good way to badly overestimate what you’re going to need.
The real picture, based on how Rockstar typically handles these announcements, is that no official install size has been published as of this writing. The studio tends to reveal storage specifications relatively close to launch, usually somewhere in the four-to-eight-week window beforehand, which points to an announcement landing sometime in the fall before the November 19 release. In the meantime, the more grounded independent estimates cluster around 150 to 200 gigabytes for the base install on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A likely day-one patch would add another 30 to 50 gigabytes on top of that, putting a realistic combined footprint somewhere between 200 and 250 gigabytes once you’re set up to play.
That’s genuinely large by historical standards, but not an unreasonable jump given what’s driving it. Five factors tend to get cited for why a game like this balloons in size: a much bigger map than any previous GTA, high-resolution textures across all of it, the streaming data needed to load that world in and out as you move, the lighting and reflection data that real-time ray tracing depends on, and expanded audio plus NPC systems layered throughout. For comparison, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both sit in the neighborhood of 100 to 110 gigabytes at their base. Even the more conservative GTA 6 estimates point to roughly double the footprint of Rockstar’s own recent releases, which tracks with everything else that’s been confirmed about the scale of this game.
What this means for you comes down to storage planning. If your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S is already sitting close to full, a 200-plus gigabyte install is the kind of thing that forces a genuine cleanup decision, not just a “delete one old game” fix. It’s also the exact reason the pre-load window matters as much as it does. Downloading that much data on launch day itself, alongside potentially millions of other players hitting the same servers, is a meaningfully worse experience than having it ready to go a week early.
If you want a rough sense of how long that download will take once real numbers land, based on your own connection speed, we’ve built a calculator for exactly that using the current published estimates. It’s worth revisiting once Rockstar’s official figure replaces the estimate.
