Will GTA 6 Hit 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X?

Rockstar says GTA 6 currently runs at 30fps on consoles and won't promise a 60fps mode. What the PS5 Pro version adds is still unannounced.

Will GTA 6 Hit 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X?

This is one of the few genuinely confirmed pieces of technical information about GTA 6, and it’s also one of the more unwelcome ones for players who’ve gotten used to 60fps performance modes being standard on current-generation consoles. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson said during a studio visit in August 2026 that GTA 6 currently runs at 30 frames per second on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. He was describing the game as it stood then, and he didn’t address the PS5 Pro at all.

Correction, October 7, 2026: An earlier version of this article said the 30fps figure had been confirmed for the PS5 Pro as well. Nelson didn’t say that. Sony’s store lists GTA 6 as PS5 Pro Enhanced, but neither Rockstar nor Sony has said what the Pro version adds. Our PS5 Pro Enhanced explainer covers what that label does and doesn’t mean.

What Nelson didn’t say is just as important as what he did. Rockstar has not promised a 60fps performance mode at launch, at any point after launch, or ever. The studio’s position, as reported, is that its own technical team isn’t yet certain whether a smoother frame-rate option is achievable given everything else the game is trying to do. That’s a notably honest thing for a studio to say out loud. Most publishers either promise a performance mode outright or simply don’t address the question until closer to launch, and it suggests Rockstar genuinely doesn’t know yet, rather than knowing and choosing not to say.

There’s a layer of unconfirmed reporting sitting on top of that official statement worth mentioning, carefully. A Polish gaming journalist has reported that Rockstar is internally testing two separate visual presets, one prioritizing fidelity at 30fps, another trading graphical detail for a 60fps target, which would mirror how most other big current-gen console games handle the tradeoff. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed this, and reports like it should be treated as plausible rumor rather than fact until the studio says otherwise. If true, the more likely scenario based on how these things usually go is that a 60fps mode arrives later, as a post-launch patch, once the wider console optimization work is finished, not as a day-one option.

Why would a studio with Rockstar’s resources and a $2 billion-plus budget ship a flagship 2026 release at 30fps in the first place? The honest answer is that GTA 6’s ambitions, the density of Leonida, the promised depth of NPC simulation, the scale of the map, are computationally expensive in ways that don’t necessarily trade cleanly for frame rate. A game built around simulating a living, reactive world may simply cost more processing power per frame than a game built primarily around visual spectacle, and 30fps at higher fidelity may be the deliberate trade Rockstar is making rather than a technical shortfall.

Whether that trade will bother you in practice depends a lot on what you’re used to. Players coming from mostly 30fps-era open-world games likely won’t notice much of a difference. Players who’ve spent the current console generation playing everything at 60fps are going to feel this one on day one, at least until, and if, that patch arrives.
