Does GTA 6 Have VR? What's Real and What Isn't
No VR mode, no VR version and no sign of one. But you can still play GTA 6 inside a headset, and there's a long history behind why a VR mod won't come quickly.

In this article
No. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 as a flat game on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and nothing Rockstar has released points to a VR mode, a VR version or support for any headset. If you own a PS VR2 or a Meta Quest, the game won’t put you inside Vice City.
That’s the short answer. The longer one is more useful, because a headset can still play a part in how you play GTA 6, and the history of GTA in VR explains why fans shouldn’t expect a mod to fill the gap any time soon.
The only VR Rockstar has shown
The closest GTA 6 has come to virtual reality is a joke. In the extended gameplay look that aired in August, one character is briefly seen wearing a VR headset that looks a lot like the original 2019 Oculus Quest. It’s set dressing, the kind of tech satire Rockstar has always packed into its worlds, and not a hint at a feature.
Nothing else in the trailers, the store pages, the ESRB rating or Rockstar’s own descriptions mentions VR. On PlayStation, VR games carry a clear “PS VR2” label on the store, and GTA 6 doesn’t have one.
Rockstar’s one VR project is on hold
There was a real GTA VR game in the works, just not GTA 6. In October 2021, Meta announced that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was being rebuilt for its Quest headsets in partnership with Rockstar. Very little was ever shown, and in August 2024 Meta confirmed the project was on hold indefinitely while both companies focused on other work.
It hasn’t been formally cancelled, but nearly three years of silence followed by an indefinite pause is a fair sign of where VR sits on Rockstar’s list of priorities, especially with GTA 6 taking up the whole studio.
Why a GTA 6 VR mod isn’t around the corner
GTA 5 became one of the most popular games to mod into VR on PC. The best-known version came from a modder called Luke Ross, whose R.E.A.L. VR framework turned GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2 and the Mafia games into full headset experiences and was distributed through his Patreon. In July 2022, Take-Two sent him a DMCA takedown notice. Ross disputed that his work used any of Take-Two’s code, but he removed support for all Rockstar and 2K games from the framework anyway.
That history matters for GTA 6 in three ways. First, every PC VR mod needs a PC version of the game, and GTA 6 doesn’t have one. There’s no announced PC date, and Rockstar’s usual pattern points to 2027 at the earliest (our PC release explainer has the full history). Second, Take-Two has already shown it will act against paid VR mods of its games. Third, the free tool behind the most recent GTA VR mod won’t help. A modder used UEVR to put San Andreas Definitive Edition into PC VR, but UEVR only works with games built on Unreal Engine. GTA 6 runs on Rockstar’s own RAGE engine, which we cover in our engine explainer.
None of that makes a GTA 6 VR mod impossible in the long run. Modders are persistent and GTA 6 will be the most requested VR conversion of the decade. It just means the realistic timeline is “some time after the PC version”, not “launch week”.
How to use a headset with GTA 6 anyway
You can’t play GTA 6 in VR, but you can play it inside a headset on a huge virtual screen. That’s a flat image, the same game you’d see on a TV, just very big and right in front of you. There are two real ways to do it.
PS VR2 owners have the official route. The headset’s Cinematic Mode shows any non-VR PS5 game on a virtual screen that can feel over 200 inches wide, in 1080p with HDR. Our PS VR2 guide explains how it works and what to expect.
Meta Quest owners can stream GTA 6 from their own Xbox through Xbox Remote Play in the Quest’s web browser. PS5 owners can do something similar, but only through an unofficial workaround. Our Meta Quest guide walks through both and explains why this is different from the Xbox cloud streaming that won’t carry GTA 6 to PC.
Both routes work with any console game today. We’ll confirm how GTA 6 itself behaves on each one once the game is out on November 19.
The bottom line
GTA 6 has no VR support and there’s no sign Rockstar plans to add it. Rockstar’s only VR project is on hold, the biggest GTA VR mod was taken down by Take-Two, and a GTA 6 mod would need a PC version that doesn’t exist yet. If you want the most immersive way to play at launch, a big screen, good headphones and a performance mode, if it comes will do more than a headset. If you already own one, the virtual-screen options above are a genuinely nice way to play.
