GTA 6 Region Checker: Will Your PS5 Code Work?
The boxed copy of GTA 6 is a download code, and on PS5 that code only works on a PlayStation account from the same region it was sold in. Imported boxes are common, especially in countries without a PlayStation Store, so check before you pay.
Why GTA 6 codes are region-locked on PS5
Every physical copy of GTA 6 is a box with a download code inside, not a disc. Rockstar's support FAQ says the code "works differently depending on the platform and country of purchase". On PlayStation 5, each code belongs to one of nine regions, and it will only redeem on a PSN account registered to a country in that region. On Xbox Series X|S, codes are not region-locked at all.
This matters most for importers. A UK box bought cheaply online won't redeem on an Indian account, because Rockstar treats the UK as its own region while India sits in the Europe and Oceania group. Sony also doesn't allow you to change the country on an existing PSN account, so a mismatched code can't be fixed after the fact.
The nine GTA 6 PS5 code regions
| Region | Account countries |
|---|---|
| North America | Canada, United States |
| Latin America | Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay |
| Brazil | Brazil |
| United Kingdom | United Kingdom |
| Japan | Japan |
| South Korea | South Korea |
| Saudi Arabia & UAE | Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates |
| Rest of Asia | Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand |
| Rest of EMEA, India & Oceania | Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine |
Two things surprise people: the United Kingdom is separate from the rest of Europe, and India is grouped with Europe, Australia and South Africa rather than with the rest of Asia.
If your country has no PlayStation Store
Sony doesn't operate a PlayStation Store in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Vietnam or the Philippines, among others. Players there usually hold an account registered to another country, and that account country decides which GTA 6 box works, not where you live. Sony's terms expect accounts to match your real country, so be aware of that before creating a new one. If you already have an account, check its country first, then buy the matching box or buy digitally from that store. Our guide to buying GTA 6 in Bangladesh walks through this for one of the biggest of these markets.
Questions people ask
Do Xbox GTA 6 codes work in any country?
Yes. Rockstar says Xbox Series X|S codes are region-free, so a box from any country works on any Microsoft account.
What happens if I redeem a code from the wrong region?
It won't activate. The PlayStation Store rejects it with a region error, and the code stays unused, so you can still sell it or return it to the seller if their policy allows.
Do Japanese GTA 6 codes expire?
Yes. Rockstar says codes sold in Japan expire 170 days after they're issued, which it links to local rules. Check the date printed on the card and redeem it straight away.
Is the Ultimate Edition affected?
The rules are about the boxed code's region. Buying Ultimate, or the $20 Ultimate upgrade, digitally from your own account's store avoids the problem entirely.
Does the region change when the game unlocks for me?
Rockstar hasn't published per-region unlock times. If GTA 6 unlocks at midnight in each store region, your account's region, not your home country, decides when you can play. Our launch time explainer has the details.
