Choosing between GTA 6’s two editions is easier once you know you’re not locked in. The Microsoft Store already lists a separate add-on called the Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade for $20.00, which turns a Standard copy into Ultimate. That’s exactly the price gap between the $79.99 Standard Edition and the $99.99 Ultimate Edition.

What the upgrade gives you

The upgrade adds the Ultimate Edition’s extra content to your game: premium vehicles, weapons, clothing and other items for Jason and Lucia. Rockstar hasn’t published a full list of everything in Ultimate, so be careful with sites that claim to have one. Our Standard vs Ultimate explainer covers what’s officially confirmed.

What the upgrade doesn’t change is the game itself. Standard is the complete GTA 6, with the full story, the whole map and every system. Ultimate is about extras, not access.

Why buying Standard first is a safe choice

Because the upgrade costs the same as the price difference, you lose nothing by starting with Standard. You can play for a while, see whether the Ultimate items would make a difference to how you play, and upgrade then if you want them. If you never feel the need, you’ve saved $20.

That also helps if you’re buying a boxed copy, since the box is a code for the Standard Edition. The upgrade gives box buyers a route to Ultimate without having to buy digitally from the start.

What about PlayStation?

As of early October 2026, the upgrade is clearly listed as an add-on on the Microsoft Store. PlayStation’s store page shows the two editions at their full prices. Sony’s store usually offers the same upgrades as Microsoft’s for multi-platform games, so a PS5 upgrade is very likely, but check the GTA 6 add-ons section on the PlayStation Store before you rely on it.

Things to check before you upgrade

Pre-order bonuses aren’t affected. The Vintage Vice City Pack and the free month of GTA+ come with either edition when you buy before launch, so you don’t need Ultimate to get them.

Prices can change. Store discounts on the base game during sales don’t always apply to add-ons, and the reverse. If you’re watching for a deal, compare the cost of Standard plus the upgrade against Ultimate on the day.

Upgrades are tied to your account and console family. An upgrade bought on Xbox won’t carry over to PlayStation, just like the game itself.

If price is the main concern, our guide to the cheapest ways to buy GTA 6 covers the rest of your options.
