How Long Is GTA 6? Story Length Explained
Rockstar North's Rob Nelson says his own playthrough took about 80 hours. Here's how that compares with GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, and what it means for you.

In this article
The only official figure we have for GTA 6’s length comes from Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, who said around the time of the Netflix Extended Look that his own playthrough took approximately 80 hours. That’s a big number, but it needs some context before you plan your November around it.
What “80 hours” means
Nelson didn’t describe his run as a speedrun or a completionist sweep. It was one developer’s playthrough, and someone who knows the game that well is likely to move through it faster than a first-time player in some places and slower in others, perhaps stopping to check details or try side content. It’s best read as a rough indication that GTA 6 is a very long game, not as a “time to beat” figure like you’d see on a tracking site.
How that compares
Player-reported averages on HowLongToBeat give useful reference points for Rockstar’s last two games:
GTA 5’s main story takes around 31 to 32 hours, and around 51 to 55 hours with side content.
Red Dead Redemption 2’s main story takes around 50 to 51 hours, and roughly 84 to 89 hours with extras.
So if GTA 6’s story alone runs anywhere near 80 hours, it would be much longer than GTA 5 and well beyond Red Dead Redemption 2’s main campaign. Even if Nelson’s figure included a fair amount of side content, it suggests a game on at least RDR2’s scale.
Why it’s likely to run long
A few things point the same way. The map is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s, with more enterable interiors than any previous GTA. The list of side activities is long: pool, mini golf, kayaking, diving, base jumping, street racing, airboats, zoos and more, according to the Game Informer cover story. Jason and Lucia’s relationship develops through time spent together between missions. And Rockstar built Red Dead Redemption 2’s slower, more detailed style of storytelling into this game, which our GTA 6 vs RDR2 comparison covers.
What a typical player might expect
A reasonable guess, and it is only a guess until the game is out, is that a player sticking mostly to story missions will need somewhere between 50 and 80 hours, and someone who explores properly will go well past that. Completionists should expect triple figures. Once the game has been out for a few weeks, tracking sites will have real averages, and we’ll update this page with them.
If you’re planning time off for launch, it’s worth remembering that 80 hours is two full working weeks of play. There’s no rush. With no online mode at launch, nothing is going to leave you behind if you take your time.
