Is GTA 6 Releasing on PS4 and Xbox One?

No, and it's not a marketing decision. The last console generation's hardware genuinely can't run what GTA 6 is built around.

Is GTA 6 Releasing on PS4 and Xbox One?

This is one of the more clear-cut confirmations in the entire GTA 6 rollout: the game is not coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, on launch day or ever. Rockstar has confirmed PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as the only console platforms, and there’s no ambiguity or “not yet confirmed” hedge around this one the way there is with, say, the PC release.

It’s worth explaining why, because it’s easy to assume this is purely a business decision to sell more current-generation hardware, and that’s not really the full picture. GTA 5 famously stretched across three console generations, launching on PS3 and Xbox 360 before later versions arrived for PS4, Xbox One, and eventually PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, a run of over a decade on the market. GTA 6 breaking that pattern by skipping the older generation entirely comes down to a genuinely technical wall, not just a marketing preference: the PS4 and Xbox One lack the fast SSD storage, CPU headroom, and memory bandwidth that GTA 6’s world and streaming systems are built around from the ground up.

That’s a meaningfully different situation from a studio simply choosing not to bother with an older platform for convenience. Games built around instant asset streaming, dense simulation, and large open worlds without loading screens genuinely depend on solid-state storage speeds that older mechanical and even early SSD-based console storage can’t deliver. Trying to force GTA 6 onto that older hardware wouldn’t just mean turning down a few graphics settings. It would likely require redesigning core systems the game is built around, which is a different and far more expensive proposition than a simple downgrade.

For anyone still on PS4 or Xbox One hoping this changes, the realistic answer is that it won’t. Unlike the PC release, where “we haven’t announced it yet” leaves room for hope, this is a platform decision Rockstar has stated outright, and there’s no technical path that makes a last-gen version plausible after the fact. If you’re planning around GTA 6, budgeting for a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S isn’t a precaution. It’s the only way in, regardless of what happens with pricing, editions, or anything else covered elsewhere on this site.
