When Is GTA 6 Coming Out? The Full Release Date Story

Grand Theft Auto 6 lands November 19, 2026, but it took two delays and a lot of nervous fan math to get there. Here's the whole timeline.

When Is GTA 6 Coming Out? The Full Release Date Story

If you’ve been counting the days, you already know the number: November 19, 2026. That’s the date Rockstar has now confirmed twice over, the date every countdown widget on this site is pointed at, and the date that, barring anything genuinely unforeseen, Lucia and Jason finally become playable. But it wasn’t always this date, and understanding how we got here explains a lot about why fans are simultaneously excited and a little superstitious about jinxing it.

Rockstar first put a window on Grand Theft Auto 6 back in December 2023, when Trailer 1 dropped alongside investor language pointing to a Fall 2025 launch. That date didn’t survive contact with reality. On May 2, 2025, just hours before Trailer 2 was due to premiere, Rockstar published a statement pushing the game to May 26, 2026, citing the extra time it needed to finish the game “to the level of quality” its previous titles are known for. Then, on November 6, 2025, it slipped again, this time landing on November 19, 2026, where it has stayed ever since.

Two delays in under two years understandably made people nervous. Rockstar games have a well-earned reputation for missing their first announced date, and GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and L.A. Noire all shifted at least once, so a second slip for GTA 6 read, to a lot of fans, like the start of a pattern rather than the end of one.

That’s what makes the more recent news worth paying attention to: Take-Two chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick has publicly and repeatedly reaffirmed the November date, and Rockstar backed that up in August 2026 by releasing an extended gameplay look rather than another delay notice. Companies preparing to push a date again don’t usually spend that month showing off new footage instead, and they don’t usually put a CEO on record like that unless they’re confident. Take-Two also has every financial incentive not to be wrong twice.

There’s a practical detail buried in all this that’s easy to miss: digital pre-orders are set to start downloading a week early, on November 12, 2026, at local midnight, so the roughly 100-plus gigabyte install has time to finish before launch day itself. If you’re planning to play the moment servers open rather than the moment your download bar fills up, that’s the date to mark, not the 19th.

It’s also worth saying plainly what this date does and doesn’t cover. November 19, 2026 is a console date: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is still no PC release date, and based on how Rockstar has handled PC ports of its last few games, there’s good reason to expect a long wait for one (we’ve written a separate piece on exactly why that gap tends to happen). So if you’re a PC-only player, the countdown that matters to you isn’t really this one at all. It’s a second, much longer one that hasn’t started yet.

For everyone else, the short version is this: two delays, a lot of understandable skepticism, and now a date that Take-Two’s own leadership has staked its credibility on. We’ll keep this page updated the moment anything changes, but for now, November 19 is the number to plan your life around.
