Will GTA 6 Include Online Multiplayer at Launch?

No, and that's a deliberate change from how GTA 5 handled it. Here's the direct answer and what it means for day one.

Will GTA 6 Include Online Multiplayer at Launch?

No. When GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, it arrives as a single-player-only experience. Rockstar has confirmed that no online multiplayer mode ships with the game on day one, which is worth stating plainly because it runs against what a lot of players simply assumed would carry over from how GTA 5 handled things.

It’s a smaller gap than it might first sound like, but a real one. GTA Online didn’t launch alongside GTA 5 in September 2013 either. It arrived a few weeks later, in October of that year, so Rockstar shipping GTA 6 without online on day one isn’t entirely without precedent from its own history. What’s different is that nobody currently knows how long the wait will be this time. GTA Online’s few-week gap in 2013 was a short, specific delay tied to a rocky launch for the servers themselves. For GTA 6, Rockstar hasn’t announced a date, a name, or even a confirmed format for whatever its online component eventually becomes, which leaves the gap open-ended in a way 2013’s wasn’t.

Why make this choice at all, especially given how enormously profitable GTA Online has been for over a decade? The most likely explanation is focus. GTA 6’s single-player campaign is being built around genuinely ambitious systems, the reworked wanted system, deeper NPC behavior, a much larger map, and shipping a fully separate online infrastructure alongside all of that adds an entirely different category of engineering and live-service work on top of an already massive single-player game. Separating the two lets Rockstar polish and ship the story first, then build its next online mode without the pressure of hitting the same release date.

For players specifically excited about the idea of a next-generation GTA Online, this means patience is required beyond just the November 19 release itself. For everyone primarily interested in the story Lucia and Jason are at the center of, it changes nothing about what you’ll be able to play at launch. We’ve written a more detailed look at what this means for the existing, decade-old GTA Online in the meantime, including why Rockstar has every reason to keep that running rather than shutting it down the moment GTA 6 arrives.
