Buying Guide: Storage & SSD for GTA 6
Rockstar's open worlds have gotten bigger with every release, and GTA 6 is expected to continue that trend, though Rockstar hasn't confirmed an install size. Day-one patches make the problem worse than people expect, since a fresh install and its first major update can briefly need almost double the final file size while old files stay in place until the new ones finish writing.
The two platforms handle storage very differently. PS5 owners can add any PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD that hits Sony's 5,500MB/s minimum read speed and comes with a compatible heatsink; once installed, it runs games at full internal-drive speed. Xbox Series X|S owners can't use standard M.2 drives at all. Microsoft's consoles require a proprietary Storage Expansion Card, currently made by Seagate or Western Digital, that plugs into a dedicated slot on the back of the console.
External USB drives work on both platforms, but only for cold storage. Neither console can run modern, optimized games directly from a USB drive. You can archive a game there and copy it back later, which is still faster than redownloading from scratch.
