GTA 6 is set in Vice City, Rockstar's fictional take on Miami, and for the final weeks before launch the real city is getting a Vice City makeover of its own. Two deals have made it official: a giant rooftop sign on the home of the Miami Heat, and GTA 6 branding along Miami Beach.

A 4,700 square foot sign on the Kaseya Center

On September 22, crews used helicopters to lift giant pink and white letters onto the roof of the Kaseya Center, the waterfront arena where the Miami Heat play. The finished sign reads “Welcome to Vice City” with GTA 6 branding, covers about 4,700 square feet, and is big enough to read from planes approaching Miami International Airport. Rockstar paid Miami-Dade County, which owns the arena, about $975,000. Under the agreement the sign stays up for at least a year.

Beach chairs and umbrellas from October 15

The second deal took more convincing. On September 10, Miami Beach commissioners voted 4 to 3 to let Rockstar advertise on the beach from October 15 to December 31. The branding is deliberately low-key: “VI” and Vice City designs on privately run beach chairs and umbrellas, rather than the full Grand Theft Auto name, with nothing on lifeguard towers or other public landmarks. Reports put the value to the city at more than $3 million, possibly close to $4 million.

The debate was heated. Opponents raised the series' violence and drug content, and some even brought up the old “Hot Coffee” controversy. The case that won was practical. As one commissioner put it, the game is “coming to Miami Beach with or without us”, and turning down several million dollars wouldn't change that.

Why Rockstar is doing this now

Rockstar rarely spends on traditional advertising, so real-world marketing at this scale is a signal in itself. Take-Two has said it doesn't spend heavily on marketing until a game is close to release. Paying for a landmark sign and a three-month beach campaign that runs through launch is about as clear a vote of confidence in the November 19 date as you'll get. It also fits a bigger pattern of GTA 6 marketing that feels more like a film or TV launch, which started with the Netflix premiere.

If you're visiting Miami before launch, the sign is easy to spot from Biscayne Bay and downtown. The beach branding goes up from October 15.
