GTA 6 Wildlife: What's Been Confirmed
More than 170 animal species, over 60 kinds of bird and 30-plus land mammals. Rockstar has now put numbers on Leonida's wildlife. Here's what's confirmed.

Update, October 7, 2026: Game Informer’s cover story gave the first official numbers: Leonida has more than 170 animal species, including over 60 kinds of bird and more than 30 land mammals. Species named in coverage of the feature include manatees, flamingos, pelicans, alligators, iguanas, armadillos, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques, with sharks, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish offshore. The Netflix Extended Look also confirmed you can pet dogs, or scold them.
Wildlife has always existed in GTA games as background texture, a deer that occasionally darts across a road in San Andreas, seagulls that mostly exist to be shot at for a trophy. GTA 6’s trailers suggest something with considerably more intention behind it, built around a real sense of what lives in a Florida-inspired ecosystem rather than a generic scattering of animals dropped in for atmosphere.
The land-based wildlife spotted so far leans heavily into details that read as specifically, deliberately Floridian rather than generic. An alligator appears prominently in trailer footage entering a convenience store, an odd detail until you know it’s a genuine, if unusual, real-world occurrence in Florida, where alligators occasionally wander into human spaces near waterways. Key deer, a real and much smaller subspecies native specifically to the Florida Keys, have also been identified, alongside panthers spotted around the Mount Kalaga region, both choices that suggest actual research into regional wildlife rather than a one-size-fits-all animal roster reused from a generic “nature” asset pack.
The marine side is even more developed, which tracks given how much of Leonida’s identity is built around coastline and water. Tiger sharks appear in early trailer shots, setting a tone of real danger for anyone exploring open water rather than treating the ocean as purely decorative. Bottlenose dolphins and loggerhead sea turtles populate calmer coastal areas, West Indian manatees, another genuinely Florida-specific species, have been spotted, and the confirmed scuba diving system we’ve covered separately is built specifically around this marine population, with reefs and deeper water each hosting a different mix of creatures.
Birdlife rounds out the picture with a level of specificity that goes further than most games bother with: American flamingos, brown pelicans, and European herring gulls have all been individually identified in footage. Smaller touches back that up too, like a green iguana in an urban setting, again a real and increasingly common sight in South Florida specifically, not a generic reptile thrown in for variety.
Rockstar still hasn’t published a complete species list, so the individual identifications above come from fans and outlets going through trailers frame by frame, the same way vehicles and locations get catalogued. The headline counts, though, are now official. But the sheer specificity of what’s been spotted, real Florida species like key deer and manatees rather than placeholder wildlife, suggests actual ecological research went into building Leonida’s animal population, not just a checklist of “animals a swamp should have.” Combined with the confirmed underwater exploration system, wildlife looks set to be a genuine part of how the world feels populated, not just occasional scenery.
