Hand-to-Hand Combat: How Melee Fighting Is Changing
Official footage already shows real dodging and wrestling-style fights. Leaked clips go further, hinting at stamina management and possibly underground fight clubs.

Melee combat has historically been one of the weaker corners of Grand Theft Auto’s moveset, functional, rarely elegant, and treated as a fallback for when you’d rather not draw a weapon. Between official footage and leaked gameplay clips, GTA 6 looks to be taking it seriously enough to be a genuine improvement rather than the same stiff punching animations with a new coat of paint.
What’s confirmed comes from Rockstar’s own August 2026 Extended Look, which included close-range fights featuring real dodging and wrestling-style exchanges rather than simple button-mashing. More importantly, Rockstar has framed this as part of a broader push toward fluid transitions between movement, cover, gunplay, and switching characters mid-encounter. Melee isn’t being treated as an isolated system bolted onto the side of everything else, but as one mode among several that’s meant to flow into the others naturally.
Beyond that official baseline, leaked gameplay footage, not confirmed by Rockstar and worth treating with appropriate caution, has shown additional detail that would represent a genuine structural change if accurate. A visible stamina indicator during hand-to-hand fights is one such detail, something the series has never really had for melee before, suggesting fights might be more about managing exertion over a longer exchange than the quick, consequence-free scraps of past games. The visual style in that same leaked footage has drawn direct comparisons to Red Dead Redemption 2’s fistfights, which were themselves a noticeable step up in weight and physicality from anything GTA 5 offered.
One specific detail has generated an outsized amount of speculation: footage reportedly showing Lucia landing a precise high kick inside what looks like a caged fighting ring. That single clip has fueled theories about underground fighting tournaments or dedicated training facilities returning in some form, echoing the boxing and fighting gyms San Andreas featured decades ago. It’s a fun thread to pull on, but it’s important to be clear-eyed about what one leaked clip can and can’t tell you. A caged environment could mean a full recurring activity, a one-off story mission, or something else entirely, and reading a whole game system into a few seconds of unconfirmed footage is exactly the kind of leap worth resisting until there’s more to go on.
Put together, expect melee combat that’s visibly more physical and better integrated with the rest of the combat loop than GTA 5’s version, based on what Rockstar has shown. Treat stamina systems, deeper mechanical depth, and anything resembling structured fight clubs as genuinely possible but unconfirmed, resting on leaked material rather than official statements.
