Police in GTA games have always been a dial: the more trouble you cause, the more stars you get, and the harder they come after you. GTA 6 keeps that dial and adds a memory. Here’s what Rockstar showed in the Netflix Extended Look and its press previews about how the law works in Leonida.

Six stars are back

GTA 5 capped the wanted level at five stars. GTA 6 restores the sixth, which earlier games in the series used for the most extreme police and military response. Rockstar hasn’t detailed what each level brings, but six stars means there’s room for one more step of escalation beyond what GTA 5 offered, and given how much more detailed Leonida’s law enforcement looks in footage, expect the top end to be serious.

For more on how police behaviour itself is changing, our wanted system and police AI explainer goes into the investigations, witnesses and search behaviour seen in trailers.

What the Criminal Profile is

On top of the wanted level, Jason and Lucia each have a Criminal Profile. The wanted level is about right now: how hot things are in this moment. The profile is about over time: the pattern of how you commit crimes.

Rockstar’s framing is that this isn’t a morality meter. Coverage of the reveal compared it to Red Dead Redemption 2’s Honor system, but where Honor sorted your actions into good and bad, the Criminal Profile doesn’t. A player who pulls off clean, efficient jobs builds a different reputation from one who leaves chaos everywhere, and that pattern affects how people in the world react to you and can feed into the story. Our GTA 6 vs Red Dead Redemption 2 comparison covers how much of RDR2’s design carries over.

What we don’t know yet is how deep the consequences go. Rockstar has shown the concept, not the full list of effects.

How the police identify you

One detail that matters a lot in practice: police can identify you by your appearance. That means a description can follow you after you escape. Small changes won’t help. Swapping a hat or putting on glasses isn’t enough to fool anyone. To shake a description you need a full change of outfit, and a new haircut also works.

This turns clothing and barbers into tools rather than just cosmetics, and it connects with GTA 6’s deeper character customization, where hair grows over time and clothes get dirty. Disguises appear in story missions too, so this isn’t just a free-roam system.

The Focus system helps you stay out of sight

The new Focus mechanic highlights nearby objects and useful details, and Rockstar specifically mentioned it helps you find routes that keep you away from the police. In practice it looks like a way to read your surroundings during an escape without pausing for a map.

What this means for how you’ll play

In GTA 5, losing a wanted level mostly meant driving out of a search circle. GTA 6 looks set to reward a bit more planning: lose the police, then change your look, and think about the kind of criminal you’re becoming. Players who just want chaos will still get it, since six stars of police response is its own kind of fun. But the systems give quieter, more careful play a reason to exist, which suits the Bonnie and Clyde story Rockstar is telling.

We’ll know exactly how the profile shapes the story once the game is out on November 19. Until then, this is what’s confirmed.
