Can You Swim and Dive in GTA 6?

Not only can you swim. Scuba diving is a full activity with reefs, wrecks, sharks and hidden loot, and it counts toward 100% completion.

Can You Swim and Dive in GTA 6?

Swimming has technically existed in GTA games since San Andreas, but it’s mostly been a way to avoid drowning rather than something worth doing for its own sake. GTA 6 looks to be the first entry that treats being underwater as an actual destination, not just a mechanic you tolerate on the way somewhere else.

Scuba diving specifically has been confirmed, and it showed up as one of the activities featured in Rockstar’s August 2026 “Extended Look” gameplay trailer alongside things like basketball and base-jumping. What makes it more than a novelty animation is the amount of detail attached to it: it’s described as a full activity built around reefs, sunken wrecks, and underwater caves, with oxygen management as an actual mechanic you have to pay attention to rather than an infinite-breath free-for-all. It’s also confirmed to count toward the game’s 100% completion tracking, which puts it on the same footing as other genuine side content rather than treating it as a throwaway gimmick.

The underwater environment itself has been built out in a level of detail that goes well beyond earlier games’ murky, empty seafloors. Official images have shown sandy plains, rocky drop-offs, deep canyons, and coral reefs modeled with real variety, populated by sea turtles, moray eels, and schools of tropical fish in the shallower reef areas. Go deeper and the tone shifts. Bull and Tiger sharks are confirmed to patrol the open water, alongside more benign wildlife like dolphins and manatees, which suggests exploring too far from the reef isn’t going to be a purely relaxing activity. The Leonida Keys region in particular appears to have been designed with diving specifically in mind, rather than diving being bolted onto a map that was designed for other purposes.

This level of underwater detail lines up with everything else Rockstar has signaled about Leonida being built as a full ecosystem rather than a backdrop: a state with genuine coastline, marine life, and now a reason to go beneath the surface of it, not just around the edges. Whether hidden loot and wreck exploration end up being a meaningful part of how players spend time in the game, or more of a nice-to-have side activity most players sample once and move on from, is something only real playtime will settle. But on paper, this is a far more developed system than “you can swim now.” It’s closer to giving the ocean its own reason to be explored.
