Who Are Lucia and Jason? Meet GTA 6's Protagonists
GTA 6's story centers on two playable characters, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, the first time a mainline GTA has put a woman at its center.

Every mainline Grand Theft Auto has had a moment where its protagonist gets properly introduced, and GTA 6’s first trailer built its entire opening around one: a woman named Lucia Caminos, walking out of prison in an orange jumpsuit, the weight of however many years inside written all over her face. It’s one of the most quietly effective character introductions Rockstar has ever put in a trailer, and it did a lot of work in a short amount of time. It established not just who she is, but that this game was going to be told from a different angle than the five men who’ve led every mainline entry before her.
Lucia is confirmed as one of GTA 6’s two playable protagonists, and the significance of that isn’t just marketing spin. Every numbered Grand Theft Auto game, from GTA 3 through GTA 5, has been led by a male protagonist. GTA 6 breaks that streak deliberately, and Rockstar has built the marketing around Lucia specifically because she represents something the series has never tried at this scale before, not because she’s a side character getting extra attention.
Jason Duval is the second half of the pair, and the two are presented as a couple whose fates are tangled together from the start. Lucia’s release from prison and Jason’s own entanglement with Leonida’s criminal underworld point toward a story about two people pulled deeper into crime partly because of each other, not despite it. Rockstar has been careful not to spell out the full plot, but the tone of what’s been shown, bank robberies, high-speed chases, a shared sense that they’re each other’s only real ally, has drawn constant comparison to Bonnie and Clyde. It’s a comparison Rockstar itself seems comfortable with rather than trying to shake off.
What makes the pairing interesting on a mechanical level, beyond the story itself, is the question of how playable time will be split between them. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed whether players will freely switch between Lucia and Jason the way GTA 5 let you swap between its three protagonists, or whether the game moves between their perspectives at set points in the story instead. Either approach has precedent in Rockstar’s own catalog, and until more gameplay is shown, it’s genuinely unclear which way GTA 6 is leaning.
What is clear is that Lucia isn’t a token addition bolted onto a story built around Jason. Every piece of marketing so far, from the trailer’s opening shot to the way Rockstar talks about the game publicly, treats her as the character the story starts with. For a series that’s spent over two decades telling stories about men, that’s not a small shift, and it’s arguably the single most talked-about thing about GTA 6’s cast before a frame of actual gameplay involving her has been shown.
