Can You Switch Between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6?

Yes. The Netflix Extended Look showed free switching while you roam and swaps in the middle of missions, with a few story moments where it's locked.

GTA 5 changed how the series handled multiple protagonists by letting players switch between Michael, Franklin and Trevor at almost any moment, a system that became one of that game’s defining features. With two leads in GTA 6, the obvious question was whether Jason and Lucia would work the same way, or whether the story would hand you one character at a time in fixed chapters.

For most of the game’s marketing, Rockstar didn’t say. That changed with the Netflix Extended Look on August 27, 2026, and this article has been rewritten to reflect what it showed.

Free switching while you roam

While you’re exploring Leonida, you can switch back and forth between Jason and Lucia freely. That’s the same basic freedom GTA 5 offered, with one fewer character to juggle. Rockstar did say switching won’t be available at some points in the campaign, which is what you’d expect from a scripted story that sometimes needs you to be a specific person in a specific place.

Switching inside missions

The more interesting part is what happens during missions. In one car chase from the footage, you’re driving as Jason, and a moment later you’re firing from the passenger seat as Lucia. Coverage of the previews described missions that let you choose between taking the wheel or handling the shooting while your partner drives. GTA 5 did something similar in its heists, but with two characters who are almost always together, GTA 6 looks set to use it far more often.

That’s the key difference from GTA 5. Michael, Franklin and Trevor spent much of their game apart, so switching meant jumping across the map into someone else’s life. Jason and Lucia spend much of theirs side by side, so switching is often about which seat you’re in rather than which city you’re in.

How it connects to the relationship

Game Informer’s cover story added another layer. Jason and Lucia’s relationship can stay platonic or become romantic depending on your choices, and the small things you do together between missions feed into it. Switching freely matters for that, because it lets you spend time with both of them rather than seeing the other only in cutscenes.

Rockstar’s writers also told LOVE magazine they designed the two as opposites, with Lucia driving events and Jason reacting to them. Playing both is how you get both halves of that.

What we still don’t know

A few details remain open. Rockstar hasn’t said whether the character you’re not controlling carries on with their own life the way GTA 5’s characters did when you switched away, or whether each has separate side activities, businesses or properties. We also don’t know exactly how often the story locks you to one of them. Those are the kinds of questions that only get answered once people are playing.

For the basics on who these two are, start with our profile of Lucia and Jason.
