The Maibatsu Penumbra has been in GTA Online since the game's original launch on September 17, 2013, but Rockstar removed it from direct sale on June 13, 2023. It originally cost $24,000 at the dealership. Today it can only be obtained by finding and stealing one off the street, most reliably around Alta, Vinewood, and Rockford Hills.
How It Drives
Broughy1322's fully-upgraded test clocks the Penumbra at 169.38 km/h (105.25 mph), with a 1:11.823 lap time, on the slower end for the Sports class. Rockstar's own in-game stat bars read 75.12 speed, 55.00 acceleration, 26.67 braking, and 68.18 handling, all on a 0 to 100 scale. That acceleration figure is the weakest of its four main stats, so the car takes noticeably longer to build speed out of corners than its handling rating alone would suggest.
How to Get One
There's no direct purchase path anymore. The dealership listing disappeared on June 13, 2023. What's left is finding one parked or driving around the world, most commonly near Alta, Vinewood, or Rockford Hills, and simply stealing it. There's no mission reward or guaranteed spawn, so availability depends on exploring those areas.
Customization Highlights
A full build runs $252,325 at Los Santos Customs, on the cheaper end for a Sports-class vehicle. Turbo tuning is the single largest line item at $42,500, followed by the Race Transmission at $26,000. Eleven livery designs are available, including options like Maibatsu Works and Maibatsu Racing, playing into its JDM identity.
Comparison to Other Variants
Against the Maibatsu Penumbra FF (a separate, related model, $1,380,000, 181.86 km/h fully upgraded), the standard Penumbra is far slower and weaker across the board, but costs nothing beyond the effort of finding and stealing one. Against the Grotti Carbonizzare, another vehicle removed from direct sale, the Penumbra is easier to obtain since it can simply be stolen off the street rather than requiring a player trade or rotation slot.
Is It Worth Buying?
Since it can no longer be bought, the real question is whether it's worth hunting down. At zero cost, yes, it's a free Sports-class car with confirmed relevance in GTA VI, even if its stats don't compete with current purchasable options. It's not worth pursuing for competitive racing, but as a freemode pickup or nostalgia grab, the price (free) is hard to argue with.
Quick Tips
- Check Alta, Vinewood, and Rockford Hills for street spawns, these are the most commonly reported locations Deliver it to Simeon during Export Requests for a $3,600 reward if it shows up as a wanted vehicle Don't expect strong acceleration even fully upgraded, its 55.00 rating is the weakest of its main stats Budget $252,325 if you want the full upgrade build, it's relatively affordable for the class Watch for it in future GTA VI content if your site tracks upcoming vehicles, it's confirmed to appear in Trailer 1.
How to Get It
Found and stolen on the street (Alta, Vinewood, Rockford Hills), Removed from direct sale since June 13, 2023
Special Features
Pros & Cons
- Free to obtain, just find and steal one off the street
- Usable in standard races
- Cheap to fully upgrade relative to most Sports-class cars
- Confirmed to return in GTA VI, giving it long-term relevance beyond current stats
- Weak acceleration (55.00 on Rockstar's own scale, the lowest of its main stats)
- Weak braking (26.67 on Rockstar's own scale)
- No longer directly purchasable, acquisition depends entirely on finding one in the world
- Not bulletproof by default, a single homing missile, RPG, or sticky bomb destroys it even at 100% armor
